Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones announced as 2017 Headliners

Leek Arts Festival is delighted to announce that the headline act for the 2017 Festival in Leek will be legendary singer songwriter RALPH McTELL and folk/blues guitar supremo WIZZ JONES.

One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating almost 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant.

Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album ‘Eight Frames a Second’ and in 1974 the release of ‘Streets of London’ earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 1993, Nanci Griffith recorded ‘From Clare to Here’ on her Grammy Award winning album and in 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

“Inspired by hearing Big Bill Broonzy and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Wizz Jones learnt his guitar licks from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry whilst playing in the coffee bars of London’s Soho in the late 1950’s.

He then followed the time-honoured buskers’ trail from the streets of Paris to the markets of Marrakech during the early 1960’s and returned to Britain with a unique acoustic guitar style,an eclectic repertoire and a ‘right hand worthy of Broonzy’!

John Renbourn, Clapton and Keith Richards have all named him as an important early influence and in May 2012 Bruce Springsteen opened his Berlin show with Wizz’s song ‘When I Leave Berlin’.

After more than 50 years ‘on the road’ Wizz continues to tour on the Acoustic Folk and Blues circuit, usually solo but sometimes with his Son Simeon on Sax, Flute and Harmonica.”

This event will be at the Foxlowe Arts Centre on Sunday May 28th 2017. Doors at 7.00pm. Concert at 7.30pm. Tickets £25 are available online now or tickets from the box office at the Foxlowe Arts Centre and Leek TIC will be available from Saturday 4th March 2017.
