The Play of Daniel (Ludus Danielis)
St Edward’s Church, Leek
Tickets: Free entry. Donations to Christian Aid Week. Refreshments.
The Play of Daniel is a medieval liturgical drama, sometimes known as a mystery or miracle play. At a time when people could not read, these plays were a way for people to learn the stories in the Bible. Often the players travelled round the towns and villages with a cart, which became the stage for the performance. This particular play was written in the 13th century by students at Beauvais Cathedral in Northern France and is unique in that the melodies that were sung at the time were written down and have survived to this day.
The story has three main sections: Interpreting the writing on the wall, the lion’s den, and some prophesying of things to come including (quirkily) an angel foretelling the Virgin birth. The whole thing, including the music, is fun, gutsy and earthy, like most medieval plays.
The play has been adapted for readers, musicians and chorus and will be performed by members of St Edward’s church and the Red Lion Singers.
Performance time: 45 minutes
